Create a new Past
by Dr. Larry Day
Have you ever wished you could start life over, change the past, make a fresh start, or simply create a whole new life for yourself? Yet another day passes, or maybe even years and no progress is made. What do we do? The answer lies in choosing to create a new past!
Of all the wonderful gifts God bestowed on us when he created us in His image (Gen. 1:26-27), the power to choose is the most significant and powerful. Many times we have unsuccessfully waited for God to fix us or change our circumstances. The truth may be that God prefers to trust how he has designed us: to be choice-makers. We can gather insight from Moses’ instruction to Israel just before his death. He wrote, “Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach…This day I call heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now CHOOSE LIFE so that you and your children may live…(Deut. 30:11, 19 italics mine).
Creating a new past is simply a series of life-giving choices, one after another. These choices are often small, seemingly insignificant. When combined over enough time they add up to substantial progress. Every day there are “life choices” and “death choices”. We can choose to stay the same, stay stuck, stay unhappy or stay a victim which just adds more “time and stuff” to the old past. On the other hand, we can choose to change, to grow, to be happy and begin to create a new past.
To make a “life choice” instead of a “death choice” a dozen times a day is to move a dozen times a day towards creating a new past.
I have counseled with many who, at some point in their lives, relinquished their ability and freedom to be in charge of their own choices. There are often various reasons why this has occurred.
A troubled childhood, difficult spouses, personal habits, hardship and tragedy can all contribute. However, the remedy is always the same. Begin making life-giving choices as the opportunities arise. Big or small. God wants you to enjoy the gift of choosing. Begin creating a new past in 2002. Choose healthy, wholesome, joy filled options. CHOOSE LIFE!!!!
God is honored when we use our ability to choose!
In the diagram below we can see how making new choices, given enough time, adds up to a “new past”. That “new past” can eventually have more impact on us than our old past. Chapters 13 and 14 of Dr Day’s book “Self-Esteem: By God’s Design” gives the opportunity for further study of these important life changing.
